“He’s missing! My kit is missing!” A shriek echoed throughout the Tribe’s cave. A small gray tabby she-cat was bristled from head to tail and panic filled her eyes. Her call alerted the entire Tribe making all cats look her way in confusion.
“Mud is missing! My little kit is missing!” She cried out again. It only took seconds for the words to slip off her lips before the whole tribe was in a frenzy searching for the lost kit. It was almost chaotic with how the cats ran around. Glow stood at the cave wall watching her tribe mates knowing they wouldn’t find the kit there. Something deep in Glow’s bones was telling her that the young kit had wandered out of the cave and was heading towards danger.
Without a second to waste Glow sprinted out of the small cave entrance. The thoughts of how the kit even managed to make it’s way out of the cave baffled her and if it wasn’t for this feeling she had she would assume he was still somewhere in the safety of the cave but she knew to trust this feeling. She’d had it before and did nothing about it not soon after one of the other to-bes was found dead. She knew it was her job to prevent that tragedy again.
Glow’s paws lead her through the pine forest territory and up the steep rocky walls of the mountain that the tribed lived close to. High above she could hear the loud roars of monsters rushing past on their path. They seemed to never stop rushing on that path and all of the tribe cats seemed to grow immune to the sound although it wasn’t like that in this moment. The sound of the monsters sounded like angry mountain lions fighting and it made Glow’s cream fur stand up on ends as she climbed the mountain side towards the path. She knew that Mud had to be up here.
“Glow! What are you doing?” A voice called from the ground down below. The she-cat didn’t have to look down to know that it was her brother Flame.
“I don’t know how I know but I just know that Mud is up here! He will be hit by a monster if we don’t hurry!” She called back as she searched the rocky terrain for the next solid rock for her to place her paws on.
“You can’t go up there! You will die! If the kit is up there than it is too late for him!”
Glow flicked her ear in annoyance and continued her climb without a word of reply. It was true, the kit might be dead already since every cat who climbed up this mountain side always died on the thunderpath but she wasn’t going to just assume he was and leave him for dead if he wasn’t yet.
Glow poked her head over the top of the cliff. The thunderpath was rock solid and as black at the night sky. Her eyes scanned the small length of earth looking for a signs of the brown tabby kit. On the other side of the thunderpath huddled to one smooth two-legged trees was the tiny body of Mud. When he saw Glow across the path he let out a cry that was drowned out by the monsters. Glow knew it was risky but she had to get across to him. She watched the path closely waiting for the right moment to sprint across. Her breath caught in her throat as she went, monsters missing her by a hair.
“Glow!” The kit managed a squeak as he left his spot and ran to the safety of the older cat. “I’m sorry! I wanted to show the Tribe how brave I was.”
“It is alright Mud. Let’s just get you back home.”
Glow gently took the young kit in her mouth and looked across the thunderpath as Flame pulled himself up onto the grassy area next to the thunderpath. She looked at her brother once before watching the monsters once again. She had to make sure her timing was perfect this time if not it wouldn’t just be her life at risk. There was a pause in the roars and Glow took off across the path, Mud’s little body bumping into her chest with every leap.
Was this real? Had she really crossed the thunderpath twice and lived to the tell the tail? The thoughts began to fill her mind and she neared the other side of the thunderpath.
“Glow! Watch--.” Flame’s voice was drowned out by the sound of ringining in Glow’s ears from the pain that engulfed her body. Her legs shook under her weight and she collapsed to tail lengths away from safety. She placed Mud down and encouraged him to quickly run to Flame. She watched the kit do so before noticing Flame calling out to her once again. She had no idea what he was saying and she suddenly felt really tired. The fear and pain she had building up seemed to all go away as her eyes drifted shut never to open again.
