The small dark tabby paced along the sandy floor of the cave floor mumbling to himself. Cloud sat above him on a pile of rocks amusingly watching her leader. It wasn’t unusual for Mulestar to come to the seer seeking her advice and wisdom on things, so when he showed up at her den again this morning she wasn’t surprised.
“Tell me about your dream once more.”
Mulestar pauses mid pace and looked over at the odd eyed white she-cat. His tail was slightly bristled and Cloud could see the annoyance in his eyes. He always had annoyance in his eyes and only a few could actually read it, she was one of the few.
“I’m walking through a cavern when I paused to look up. There is an opening in the roof of the cave and I can see the stars brightly shining down one me. Suddenly the stars begin to swirl and shine brighter almost blinding me. I look away only to see movement in the sand at my feet. A timber rattlesnake lifts itself from the sand and stretches out long fangs before it strikes me. Then I awake.”
Now it was Cloud’s turn to start pacing as she analyzed his dream. To her it was pretty obvious what his dream was. Once she finds the words to explain it, she sits down and stairs at the small tom.
“The first part of your dream means that you will anger the ancestors. You have or will do something so horrid that they will punish you for all of eternity. The second part of the dream means that your last life will be taken away by the fangs of a timber. I can only assume that Starclan is telling you Timberfang will be the end of you.”
“I knew that I shouldn’t have made Timberfang deputy.” Mulestar let out a hiss and slashed his claws at the wall of the cavern leaving scratch marks.
“Well, it is tradition and there isn’t anything you could have done to change it.”
“Maybe, but I can change it now. I took care of Roosterstar why can’t I take care of Timberfang as well?”
The purr that emerged from Mulestar’s throat caused shivers to run down Cloud’s spine and her fur to stand on end. She knew what he meant by ‘take care of’, all she wanted was to warn the clan’s deputy yet she knew better than to get in the way of Mulestar’s plans. Her thoughts instantly recalled how she had been given the scar on her neck. She raised a paw to adjust the bird feather she had placed in her fur to cover up scar.
“Thank you, Cloud that Never Settles, for your wisdom.”
Mulestar purred softly in her ear, she could feel his whiskers on her nose, and her heart beat quickly with fear. He had reminded her of how deadly he really was. She was frozen in panic and couldn’t say or move. He just turned and proudly walked out of her den leaving her to her memories and terrors.
