“Why is he always so strange?”
Speckledfrog could hear the hushed voice of Torntalon speaking to Dustwind from where they sat a few coyote lengths away from him. He’d come out with the sunhigh patrol in order to find some of the herbs he’d been missing for a few days. He hated going on patrols because they always seemed to look at him funny and judge him as he sniffed around the field in search for his treasure but Mulestar was leading this patrol and he always felt safe with Mulestar around so he tried not to pay attention to the other two cats.
“That’s enough out of you.”
Mulestar’s voice was sharp and caused Speckledfrog to jump slightly. He didn’t like it when cats used harsh tones even if they weren’t aimed at him. He looked over to see the small brown tabby’s fur on ends and rage blazing in his copper eyes that glared at Torntalon. Speckledfrog noticed that the usually confident, large chocolate tom was now cowering.
“You will never disrespect the medicine cat like that again. Do I make myself clear?”
Torntalon flinched and nodded as Mulestar somehow made himself seem taller. After feeling satisfied that he was understood Mulestar trotted over to Speckledfrog, all of the rage and sharpness was gone from his expression and body language now.
“Are you alright?”
Speckledfrog looked down at his paws and shuffled them in the dirt as if he was a bashful kit again. It made him uncomfortable when the attention was on him like that. He didn’t look up when he nodded his head yes till Mulestar placed a paw on his shoulder.
“Why don’t you tell me what herbs you are looking for and we can find them together? You can tell me about what they are for as we look.”
Excitement built up in Speckledfrog’s chest. He loved teaching others about his herbs and the fact it was Mulestar only made it better. He bounded a few feet away while chattering, “well, Turkeyscream has been having a lot of forgetfulness lately which has caused him to be anxious so I thought I’d find him some chamomile. It should help sooth him.I usually find it around here. I think the two-legged plants it our here.”
Mulestar nodded and purred as he crouched down to sniff the ground in search for any signs of chamomile. After a few seconds he flicked his tail for Speckledfrog to follow him and trotted away.
Speckledfrog spent the rest of the time talking about the herb and enjoying Mulestar’s company. He never understood why his clan members always say Mulestar was scary; the leader was always patient and kind to Speckledfrog. In fact, Mulestar seemed to be his only real friend within the clan.
