Loves goodbye
(610 words. Sandflower is Sandwing before her name change.)
What was he doing? Thunder and lightning crashed across the summer night sky making it light up in purple while the wind hissed through the hay field. It was not the kind of weather Redcinders thought he'd be caught dead in but here he was slinking through the grass. His bright red fur stood up all the way down his spine and his ears laid flat against his skull. Every couple of seconds the lightening would strike and he'd jump then look over his shoulder. He felt as if he was being followed. Even though he knew he wasn't he couldn't help jumping at every twig snap. If Mulestsr knew that he was out here he knew he'd be dead. A few times this paranoia caused him to want to turn around and go back go camp but after a second of closing his eyes and reminding himself as to why he was out there he'd push on.
Finally, Redcinders came to the clan's border. Beyond where he sat were rolling hills that turned into mountains. To many it would be exciting to go and explore but the thought of his paws leaving his clan's territory terrified him more than anything. Redcinders was so lost in his own thoughts that he never noticed the scent of a new cat.
"You're here?"
The voice caused him to jump out of his pelt before he realized who it was. The sleek cream frame of Sandflower slipped out of the darkness of the night and came to touch noses with Redcinders. Her presence instantly erased all fears and worries that had been forming in his chest. He even began to wonder if he would leave his home for her.
"I wasn't sure if you were going to come."
"Ofcourse I'm here. I couldn't not come."
He bashfully looked at his paws as he spoke in the softest tone. To most cats it was hardly audible but this was something he knew Sandflower was use to. She seemed to always hear him and knew what to do. She'd been his mate and friend for so long, sometimes he felt like she knew him better than he knew himself. He loved her for that.
Suddenly, lightening crashed again, this time louder than ever before causing him to jump and crouch low to the grown. His claws dug into the dirt and his eyes grew wide. Sandflower smiled softly and while giving a soothing purr she licked the back of Redcinder's neck.
"Do not worry my love it is just a little lightning. "
Redcinders was so grateful for this small act as he buried his face into her neck fur taking in her sweet scent. That is when reality hit him hard and he felt like his heart was shattering.
Sandflower had been banished from the clan and she would never return. He knew he would never see her again even if he briefly thought he could leave his home for her he knew he really couldn't. His life would never be the same.
"Don't leave me. I-I-I." He stuttered trying to tell her what he felt. Sandflower held her tail to stop him.
"I know, I love you too." She was no longer purring. Pain filled her eyes as she licked Redcinders' cheek. They both knew this was goodbye and neither one of them seemed to want to let the other leave. Sandflower curled around Redcinders like she had done many times before to comfort him. She intertwined her tail with his and softly purred an old nursery lullaby. He laid his head against her shoulder listening to her soft tune and steady heart beat.
