I always loved my brother, he was my best friend. As young kits Timberfang and I would go on great adventures within the camp and dreamed of becoming the greatest warriors. I didn’t realize at the time that he was destined to become the clan leader and I was not. As a young kit you don’t pay much attention to the clan traditions like who will become the next leader. It wasn’t until we became apprentices and his mentor was the clan leader that I realized he was chosen to become the next future deputy only because he was the first male born in our litter. I tried to ignore the jealousy that built up inside me, I loved Timberfang and I wanted to support him. It was hard being supportive of a cat who constantly bragged about how he was going to become an amazing leader and how his mentor was so amazing while I was being trained by the clan’s coward and would amount to nothing. I even asked the clan’s leader who was Roosterstar at the time about giving me the opportunity to prove myself as a future deputy candidate; he laughed in my face and told me that only Timberfang would ever become deputy. That was it, the last straw; I couldn’t handle the leader looking down at me as if I was good for nothing. There was only one way I would ever become the clan’s next deputy; I had to kill my brother.
As an apprentice I wasn’t sure how I’d accomplish this task but I knew that if I ever wished to become deputy I needed the current deputy’s help. Mulepelt was the best deputy the clan had ever had. He seemed approachable and very concerned with the needs of the clan. When I asked him to help me with my training because my mentor Dustwind was useless he just purred and agreed. Spending more time with Mulepelt than even my brother, who was his apprentice, we became to grow close and I learned he was my greatest confidante. I told him about my plans and dreams and to my surprise Mulepelt was eager to help, he even let me in a little on his plans to get rid of Roosterstar which made me glad because I despised the leader but at the time our focus was getting rid of my brother.
We’d come up with a plan that took place not too long after I became a warrior. Mulepelt sent the two of us out to patrol the southern border that lined Two-legged cattle farm. It was close to moonhigh which meant that the two cattle dogs that lived on the farm would be out running around. The two dogs were vicious and would attack a cat on sight. I knew that all I had to do was lead Timberfang into their jaws and he would finally be out of my way. As we came to the border I climbed up onto on the wooden posts and looked out across the field. The two dogs were close, I knew that once they caught onto our scent they would charge us and I would safely shoot up the dead tree near the fence post I sat on while my brother played hero. The dogs caught our sent and as I predicted were bolting towards us. I jumped down from the fence and was about to take off up the tree when my paws came out from under me. I looked to see I was caught in the barbed wire fence. My plan failed, Timberfang barley even got a scratch while the dog’s found me as an easier kill. Timberfang got away to live and become the clan’s deputy while I died while failing to bring him down.
